Everyone’s talking about Duursma — and fair enough, he went Pick 1. But the bloke who went one pick later might end up being the better SuperCoach pick. Quietly.
The Numbers
No AFL data yet, but Uwland’s draft year was ridiculous. His clearance numbers in the NAB League were top-2 in the entire competition, and his contested possession rate would’ve ranked in the top 20 in the actual AFL. That’s not a typo. Clearances are worth 8 SuperCoach points each. If he translates even half that contested work to senior level, you’re looking at a 50+ average from basement price.
Role & Opportunity
Gold Coast is the perfect landing spot and it’s not even close. The Suns have a track record of blooding kids immediately — they don’t wrap them in cotton wool. Anderson and Rowell are there, sure, but the Suns have consistently shown they’ll play a 3-4 man midfield rotation and give young talent genuine CBA time alongside their established stars.
Word from people close to the Suns is that Uwland has genuinely surprised them through preseason. They expected him to need time. He doesn’t. Hearing he’s been matching Rowell at stoppages in match sims, which — if true — is absurd for an 18-year-old.
The Suns’ attacking game style also helps. High disposal counts across the board, quick ball movement, lots of scoring opportunities. It’s the best possible environment for a young contested mid to inflate his SuperCoach numbers.
SuperCoach Verdict
Strong buy. The whisper pick of 2026. Basement price, high job security, elite contested skillset, and a club that plays youth. Expect 15-18 games minimum and a 45-55 average — potentially higher if the preseason buzz is legit. Pair him with Duursma for the ultimate basement-price midfield strategy.
Betting Angle
Uwland might fly under the radar in debut markets. While everyone’s watching Duursma’s first game, Uwland’s disposal line could be set generous. Gold Coast’s Round 1 opponent matters — if they draw a softer midfield, that’s a spot to watch.
